A TREATISE ON THE FLIGHT OF FANCY And a POETS PLIGHT - the 1983 movie set in the indian hinterlandS is a socio-economic comment on the bourgeois demimonde and the consequential milieu that results from a the plight of a neglected RURAL population and a failed feminine intellectual revolution where a society cannot absorb the eccentric female character and does not make any attempt to comrehend their psyche either . superficially it is the tale of a demetia afflicted old woman who lives in the foothills of himalaya with her three daughters ,and aspires and dreams of a secure but somewhat demure future for her 3 offspring . she herself is an erstwhile nautcg girl and in her afflicted mental status gets delusional reminiscences of a somewhat beguiling past . the daughters are all strong young willed creatures who know what they want yet empatetic to their mother . waheeda rehman gives a nuanced and memorable portrayal as the mother who has mood swings and lapses of memory with alternate agression and affectionate swings,and it seems gulzar wrote the script with her in mind to play this terrific role . sharmila tagore is the eldest sister who disdains all frivolity and wants to reflect the modesty and morality of the bourgoies that her mother is so eager to imitate , while shabana azmi is the middle daughter who is deaf mute and the bane of her mothers existence as she is despairing of her future marital prospects . the youngest is varaile and she is quite proud of the musical heritage of her mothers dancing glory and wants to imitate her steps much to the mothers chagrin . in the midst of this rather medley of eccentric triumvarate drops a lorry driver sanjeev kumar in his travails and it becomes a rather very bold drama as to who is motivated by what desires in the context of lust and desire with one man and the 3 feline females . the complex characters are consummately played and astutely realised by the genius of gulzar as writer and director . i have not seen a better treatment of this personal dilemma even by ingmar bergmanon on the intricacies of the unusual human characteristics relationships with subtle but surreal behaviour and the milieu here is so ghastly affective ,dark and yet tender that it makes your mind and heart glow with praise . it is almost compulsive -obsessive and yet very sophisticated in tracing the emotional upheavel of all the protagonists -the narrative is untraditional and it is not a conventional movie in any aspect . it is groundbrealking yet totally compelling in every frame . this is poetic if not sheer genius and the best in art created on movie screen anywhere . the poetry is haunting with the mist drenched locales of himachal and the wet glistening rooftops and forests just take your breath away . if you have not seen this you aint seen nothing yet
